Abstract

The use of harmful refrigerants and the high energy consumption associated with conventional refrigeration, cooling, and air-conditioning systems contribute significantly to global warming. Consequently, developing eco-friendly and energy-efficient cooling systems are critical in addressing this issue. One of the most promising alternatives is the integration of solar energy into cooling and air-conditioning units, known as solar cooling systems (SCSs). SCSs are becoming more efficient, cost-effective, and viable, especially in hot and humid climates, where high cooling demands and abundant solar energy are prevalent. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the potential for utilizing SCSs in such environments. Popular SCSs driven by solar thermal energy, including absorption, adsorption, and desiccant cooling are discussed in detail, with a focus on their operational principles and development. Recent advancements in these technologies from the most recent publications are reviewed. Through an analysis of recent studies, this review addresses the challenges and limitations of SCSs and offers recommendations for optimization. Additionally, case studies are summarized to assess the performance of SCSs under different weather conditions in hot–humid climates. The review evaluates the potential applications of SCSs in these climates, considering factors such as system efficiency, operational feasibility, economic viability, and environmental impact. This review aims to provide insights and opportunities for future research on the feasibility and broader adoption of SCSs, which are becoming increasingly relevant considering growing environmental concerns.
