Abstract
The article focuses on the ecological challenges facing the Red Sea, a semi-enclosed marine basin notable for its coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass meadows. It highlights widespread anthropogenic contamination, including microplastics and heavy metals, alongside nutrient enrichment, habitat modification, shipping, and hydrocarbon pollution, which collectively threaten ecosystem resilience. Current management efforts are largely sectoral and localized, insufficient to address the cumulative and transboundary nature of these pressures. The article emphasizes the need for basin-scale governance involving coordinated action among national and intergovernmental bodies to regulate development, reduce pollution, and protect interconnected habitats to sustain biodiversity and coastal protection.
