Abstract

The article focuses on the suspension of uranium production by French nuclear fuel company Orano in Niger due to the closure of export routes and deteriorating political conditions following a military coup in July 2023. Orano's local subsidiary Somaïr halted operations in the Arlit region from October 31, 2024, citing financial difficulties and the inability to export uranium concentrate, partly because of Niger's closed border with Benin. Despite the suspension, Orano assured that its uranium supply remains secure through alternative sources, and workers will continue to be paid until the end of 2024. Additionally, Niger has signed a uranium mining cooperation deal with Turkey, aiming to develop local mining expertise. The article also briefly reports on a police crackdown on illegal miners in South Africa, where hundreds were detained amid efforts to curb clandestine mining activities.
