Efficacy of aural detection methods for detecting Northern Pika (Ochotona hyperborea) occupancy in rocky and densely vegetated habitats.

Abstract

This article focuses on evaluating two aural detection methods—auditory observation and playback—for surveying the occupancy of the Northern Pika (Ochotona hyperborea) in Hokkaido, Japan, a species vulnerable to climate change and difficult to monitor visually due to dense vegetation and rugged terrain. Conducted at 18 sites in and around Daisetsuzan National Park during summer 2021, the study found that both methods effectively detected Northern Pika presence, with playback eliciting vocal responses more quickly and requiring less survey time than auditory observation. The results indicate that vocalization-based surveys are practical, affordable tools for monitoring Northern Pika populations, especially in habitats where visual detection is challenging, and can aid conservation efforts amid environmental changes. The study also discusses methodological considerations, including survey duration, potential biases, and the need to avoid habituation in playback surveys.
