Abstract
The article focuses on the identification and description of three vertebrae specimens from Holocene right whales found in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. The primary specimen, HOKM- 37718, is suggested to belong to the family Balaenidae, specifically the North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica), based on morphological features. The other two specimens, SMAC 2755-1 and SMAC 2755-2, are classified as Balaenidae indeterminate and Mysticeti indeterminate, respectively. The findings highlight the limited records of Holocene baleen whales in Japan, emphasizing the need for further research to enhance understanding of their prehistoric distribution in the North Pacific Ocean.
