Abstract

This article focuses on India's transition from coal-based energy to renewable energy sources to address environmental pollution, energy security, and sustainable development. It details the current status and future potential of renewable energy in India, highlighting significant contributions from solar, hydro, wind, bioenergy, and geothermal power, with a national target of 337 GW renewable capacity by 2027. The government's policies, including the Electricity Act 2001 and rural electrification initiatives, alongside private sector investments, have driven growth in renewable infrastructure and energy efficiency. Challenges such as high initial costs, transmission infrastructure, market barriers, and intermittency of renewable sources are discussed, as well as opportunities for innovation, employment, and integration with information technology. The article underscores renewable energy's role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering import dependency, and supporting India's goal of providing affordable, reliable electricity nationwide.
