Abstract
The article discusses the history and current state of land and water management in Oregon. It highlights the success of Oregon's land-use program, which was established in 1973 to combat suburban sprawl and protect agricultural land. The program is administered by the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD) and is guided by 19 statewide land-use planning goals. The article also features an interview with Brenda Bateman, the director of DLCD, who emphasizes the importance of integrating land and water policies and acknowledges the need to include tribal partners and address climate change in future planning efforts. Despite challenges and the need for improvement, Oregon's land-use planning system continues to evolve and lead in areas such as climate action, housing production, and equity initiatives.
