Abstract
Researchers are warning that carbon-free fuels like hydrogen and ammonia, which are seen as climate-friendly alternatives, could have negative side effects if not produced and used properly. These fuels, which produce only water and nitrogen when burned, could generate pollutants that harm human health and negate the climate benefits if there are leaks or incomplete combustion. For example, using ammonia as a fuel could have a greenhouse gas footprint as bad as burning coal. The potential side effects of these fuels are often overlooked, with the focus primarily on carbon dioxide emissions. It is important to address these issues before they become a problem as the ammonia and hydrogen economies continue to grow. [Extracted from the article]
