Abstract

The article focuses on South32 Ltd.'s decision to idle its Mozal aluminum smelter in Mozambique due to unsuccessful negotiations for an affordable power supply beyond the current month. Mozal, Europe's largest aluminum smelter and a significant contributor to Mozambique's economy and exports, accounted for about one-fifth of Europe's raw aluminum imports in the previous year. The shutdown exacerbates global aluminum supply constraints amid reduced output from Bahrain's smelter and adds economic pressure on Mozambique, which is already facing fiscal challenges. South32 owns 63.7% of Mozal, with the South African Industrial Development Corporation and the Mozambican government holding the remainder. The alumina previously supplied to Mozal from Australia's Worsley refinery will now be redirected to third-party customers. [Extracted from the article]
