How may solar geoengineering impact global prospects for climate change mitigation?

Abstract
The article focuses on the potential interactions between solar geoengineering (SG)—a climate intervention method that cools the planet by reflecting sunlight—and greenhouse gas emissions mitigation efforts. It explains that SG can rapidly reduce global temperatures at relatively low cost but is an imperfect and temporary measure that does not address the root cause of climate change, unlike mitigation which reduces emissions permanently. The authors identify three main channels through which SG could influence mitigation: direct competition for resources, preservation of mitigation capacity via reduced climate damages, and behavioral effects that might reduce the urgency for emissions reductions. While empirical evidence on these interactions is limited and uncertain, the article emphasizes that SG should be developed as a complement to, not a substitute for, mitigation, and recommends policies to enhance their complementarity, including expanded research, governance frameworks that include historically marginalized countries, and linking SG deployment with mitigation commitments.
