The use of plant based materials in architecture: A review.

Abstract

Due to the rapidly increasing human population since the beginning of the 20th century, and with the rapid development of industrialization, the use of raw materials has increased significantly in the last century. As a result, limited resources began to decrease rapidly. The destruction on the natural environment, environmental pollution and the effects of global warming have reached alarming levels. On the other hand, the need for raw materials and energy continues to increase. At this point, it is extremely important to meet today's needs in a sustainable way, without causing environmental pollution and without consuming limited resources. In order to meet the need for sustainable building materials, studies on the use of plant biomass in the production of building materials are increasing due to reasons, such as having low environmental impact, low cost, and renewable. Since building materials produced from plant biomass are largely biodegradable, they also contribute to the prevention of environmental pollution. In this context, the plants examined in the study were examined in detail in an order from woody plants to herbaceous plants and from plants commonly used in architecture to less commonly used plants.
