Abstract

This article systematically reviews the development, effectiveness, and challenges of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes in India, governed primarily by the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the EIA Notification, 2006. Based on a rigorous analysis of 47 peer-reviewed studies spanning 1987 to 2024, it highlights the evolution of EIA practices in India, including integration of socioeconomic factors, technological advancements like GIS and remote sensing, and increasing attention to sustainability and climate change. The review identifies key gaps such as limited cumulative impact assessments, underutilization of modern technologies, insufficient socio-cultural impact evaluations, and variability in public participation effectiveness. Recommendations emphasize enhancing policy frameworks, capacity building, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and adoption of emerging technologies to improve the comprehensiveness and practical impact of EIAs in supporting sustainable development across India's diverse ecological and socio-economic contexts.
