Abstract

This article discusses the challenges that companies face in navigating the evolving landscape of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices in the United States and Europe. While U.S. firms are urged to reduce their ESG efforts by some stakeholders, European companies face increasing regulatory demands. The article suggests that a corporate statement of purpose can provide clarity and guidance in this complex environment. It highlights four reasons why a statement of purpose is important, including providing clarity on corporate outcomes, identifying stakeholders, creating value for investors, and navigating regulatory differences. The article also provides examples of companies in sustainability-challenged industries that have articulated a multi-stakeholder corporate purpose. The authors argue that companies should enact their corporate purpose to drive positive change and innovation in a profitable way. [Extracted from the article]
