Abstract
This article examines how functional diversity within top management teams (TMTs)—defined as the variety of functional roles such as engineering, marketing, and law among senior executives—influences firm environmental performance in Chinese manufacturing firms from 2010 to 2019. The study finds that greater TMT functional diversity leads to more comprehensive environmental-policy disclosures, which mediate improved environmental outcomes. Additionally, government subsidies strengthen this relationship by providing financial resources and legitimacy, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of environmental disclosures on performance. The research contributes to understanding the strategic role of TMT composition in environmental governance and highlights the moderating effect of external government support on firms' environmental initiatives.
