Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of Australia's fossil fuel project approvals on biodiversity and climate change, highlighting the extinction of the Bramble Cay melomys due to anthropogenic climate change. An independent review in 2020 found Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act ineffective, prompting the current administration to revise it while still approving fossil fuel projects. The recently passed Environment Protection Reform Bill aims to enhance environmental protections but lacks requirements for assessing greenhouse gas emissions and their effects on biodiversity. The article argues for urgent amendments to the bill to ensure that new projects are evaluated for their full emissions impact and sustainability. [Extracted from the article]
