Abstract
If Seers and Deane were early voices of resistance, they would be joined by a much wider chorus during the late 1960s and 1970s, when the GNP-based growth paradigm weathered its fiercest critique. Few acronyms have more profoundly shaped the contours of human life during the past century than GNP (gross national product) and GDP (gross domestic product). Macekura's early chapters detail the first generation of growth critics active in the late 1940s and 1950s, many of whom were trained economists that had begun their careers as advocates of aggregate economic measurement.
