Abstract
The Netherlands plans to maintain its natural gas reserves above the mandatory target set by the European Union for 2024. While the EU-wide target is 90% full gas-storage sites, the Netherlands aims to stockpile reserves as high as possible, despite the closure of its largest gas field, Groningen. The country qualifies for reduced storage targets due to its gas-pipeline interconnector with the UK. The European Commission has been advocating for gas savings and stockpiling since the energy crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Netherlands expects similar storage refills this year, although the absence of gas from the Groningen field poses an additional challenge. [Extracted from the article]
