Abstract
This article focuses on a practice-led research project by ArtsAction Group (AAG) involving socially engaged art (SEA) and science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) workshops with Tamil secondary students in Ilavalai, Sri Lanka, addressing the community challenge of ocean and beach pollution. The project integrates the engineering design process (EDP) with SEA to engage students in researching, prototyping, and reflecting on solutions for pollution, while fostering hope, resilience, and future-making as cultural capacities within a post-war, marginalized Tamil context. The workshops emphasized collaborative, student-centered learning and creative problem-solving, highlighting the role of arts and culture in community development and social transformation amid ongoing ethnic tensions and environmental injustices. The article concludes by reflecting on the importance of relational, respectful partnerships and loving kindness in educational practices that support communities in envisioning hopeful and meaningful futures.
