Abstract

This study focuses on alarm fatigue experienced by nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) and inpatient clinics in university hospitals across five cities in Turkey. Alarm fatigue, primarily caused by frequent false alarms from medical devices such as monitors and infusion pumps, was reported by more than half of the 592 participating nurses and was associated with physical fatigue, increased workload, decreased concentration, and reduced trust in alarm systems. Nurses with fewer years of professional experience reported higher levels of alarm fatigue and desensitization, while some nurses engaged in potentially unsafe practices like muting or turning off alarms to manage the burden. The findings highlight the need for improved alarm management protocols, user-friendly devices, appropriate staffing, and targeted training to mitigate alarm fatigue and enhance patient safety.
