Abstract
This article reviews the valuation of regulating ecosystem services (RES) in Africa, analyzing 31 peer-reviewed studies to assess trends, methodological preferences, and policy impact reporting. It finds a predominance of single-method approaches, uneven geographic distribution of studies—mainly concentrated in South Africa and Ethiopia—and inconsistent reporting on policy implications. The review highlights challenges such as methodological fragmentation, limited guidance on method selection, and the absence of standardized frameworks for policy impact communication. It proposes a decision tree model to aid in choosing appropriate valuation methods based on factors like scale and cost, and calls for interdisciplinary collaboration and standardized approaches to improve the integration of RES valuation into sustainable ecosystem management and policymaking in Africa.
