Abstract
This article focuses on the dynamic performance of circular water tanks resting on the ground during seismic shaking, investigated through shaking table experiments. Three acrylic tanks with varying height-to-diameter (h/D) ratios were tested to measure hydrodynamic pressure and sloshing wave height under different frequencies, amplitudes, and water levels. Results indicate that dynamic pressures can increase by 20%–50% compared to static pressures, with the highest dynamic pressures occurring at the tank top and bottom depending on water height and frequency. Additionally, sloshing height varies irregularly with frequency but generally increases with water height across all h/D ratios. The study highlights the importance of considering dynamic loads and resonance effects in the seismic design of water tanks to ensure their structural integrity during earthquakes.
