Abstract

The article focuses on how data-driven technologies, including sensor networks, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), are being used to develop greener, more sustainable cities. Professor Julie McGann of Imperial College London explains that sensor data analyzed through AI and ML enables detailed modeling of urban environments, informing improvements such as optimized traffic flow and pollution reduction. The integration of these technologies must consider energy consumption, device lifecycle, and compatibility with existing infrastructure, often requiring retrofit solutions or innovative approaches like embedding sensors in 3D-printed structures. Future developments aim to enhance resource circularity and enable cities to autonomously balance sustainability goals through intelligent data use and automation.
