Abstract
This article focuses on the environmental and infrastructural impacts following a bridge collapse near Columbus, Montana, which caused train cars carrying hot asphalt and molten sulfur to fall into the Yellowstone River. Preliminary water and air quality tests overseen by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency found no immediate public health risks, as the spilled substances solidify quickly and do not dissolve in water. The Federal Railroad Administration is investigating the derailment, while efforts continue to safely remove the damaged cars and assess potential environmental effects. Additionally, the collapse disrupted internet service due to damage to a fiber-optic cable, and experts suggest that recent high river flows may have contributed to the bridge failure.
