Abstract

The article discusses two contrasting examples of how human activity impacts the environment. The first example is the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico caused by agricultural runoff from corn and soybean fields in the American Midwest. This runoff leads to toxic algal blooms and disrupts ecosystems. The second example is the Kalundborg Symbiosis in Denmark, where companies and utilities have developed a cooperative program to practice circular production. This program involves the efficient reuse of water, heat, and materials among partner facilities. The article suggests that these examples highlight the concept of a "metabolic rift" between humans and nature, and emphasizes the need for sustainable practices in industrialization and agriculture.
