Abstract

A project funded by Thungela Resources Ltd., a company spun off by Anglo American Plc, is working to repopulate a river system in South Africa with fish after a toxic spill from a disused coal mine. The goal is to reintroduce 17 species of fish to the Wilge and Olifants river systems that were wiped out by the spill. The project includes a fish breeding facility, water treatment plants, wetland restoration, and securing old mines. The river system could take five to 10 years to recover with intervention, but 40 to 50 years without it. [Extracted from the article]
