Abstract
The article focuses on the re-eutrophication of Lake Erie, examining its causes, consequences, and management strategies. It identifies increased nutrient runoff, particularly phosphorus from the Western Lake Erie Basin, as the primary driver of this issue, exacerbated by climate variability. The resulting harmful algal blooms (HABs) have significant ecological and economic impacts, including hypoxic zones and threats to water and food safety. The article discusses various studies that explore the effects of HABs on aquatic communities and the effectiveness of best management practices (BMPs) in mitigating nutrient loading, highlighting the need for ongoing research and adaptive management strategies to address these challenges.
