Assessing the sustainable development in the European Union: influence of municipal waste, industrial waste, and waste related patents.

Abstract
This article examines the environmental impact of municipal waste, industrial waste, and waste-related innovation on the load capacity factor (LCF)—a metric of ecological quality—in 17 European countries from 2005 to 2020. Using panel data analysis with augmented mean group (AMG) and half panel jackknife (HPJ) causality methods, the study confirms the load capacity curve (LCC) hypothesis and finds that both municipal and industrial waste negatively affect the LCF, indicating environmental degradation. However, innovation in waste management, measured by patents, shows no significant impact on improving the LCF in these countries. The findings highlight the need for enhanced waste management policies and technological adoption to mitigate the environmental harm caused by waste and support the European Union’s transition toward a circular economy and sustainable development goals.
