Abstract
The article focuses on Proteus Marine Renewables' installation of its upgraded AR1100 tidal turbine in the Naru Strait to provide power to Japan's Gotō Island communities. The 1.1 MW turbine, commissioned in February 2025, features advanced pitch and yaw control for improved energy capture and durability, and is designed for island-scale microgrids with a capacity factor of approximately 30%. Proteus has partnered with SKF and GE Vernova to enhance turbine maintenance and grid integration. The initiative aligns with Japan's national energy diversification and decarbonization goals, positioning the AR1100 as a model for similar renewable energy projects in coastal and island regions globally.
