Abstract
Three farm dams in South Africa's Western Cape province have collapsed, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of people. The retention walls on the reservoirs burst on August 8, causing significant damage to properties, vehicles, and infrastructure. The Department of Water and Sanitation has granted permission for the construction of an emergency spillway on a fourth barrage to mitigate the risk of failure. The Department of Human Settlements has dispatched an emergency housing team to assist affected families. The dams in the province are currently overflowing due to heavy winter rains.
