Abstract
This article explores the history, design, and educational use of early electric motors, focusing on various types encountered by the author in scientific collections. It highlights the Page-type motor, developed by Charles Grafton Page and sold by Daniel Davis Jr., as a foundational rotary motor design widely used in physics teaching from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. The article also discusses less common reciprocating motors, motors powered by Earth's magnetic field, and demonstration models such as the St. Louis motor and the "Little-Hustler" toy motor, noting their construction, operation, and pedagogical applications. Additionally, it covers specialized motors like those used to rotate Geissler tubes and Froment-type motors, as well as motor-generator sets illustrating the close relationship between electric motors and generators. The article serves as a resource for understanding the evolution and instructional value of simple electric motors in physics education.
