Abstract

The article focuses on the environmental challenges posed by contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), particularly pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), in water resources. CECs, which include various synthetic and naturally occurring chemicals, have been detected in multiple environmental compartments and can adversely affect human health and ecosystems. The article highlights the inadequate wastewater treatment practices in underdeveloped and developing countries, such as Brazil, where urban wastewater contributes significantly to water pollution. It also discusses the European Union's efforts to establish regulatory standards for PhACs and the need for improved detection and removal technologies in wastewater treatment plants to mitigate these environmental risks.
