Abstract

The article focuses on REI's achievement of becoming the first major retailer in the U.S. to reach a zero-waste target by 2024, diverting at least 90% of its waste from landfills. Under the leadership of its sustainability director, the company has implemented various strategies, such as reducing plastic packaging and collaborating with partners like Trex to recycle plastic into decking, successfully recycling 2.5 million pounds since 2020. Additionally, REI has made significant progress in recycling e-bike batteries, fuel canisters, and bike tubes and tires, while also enhancing efforts in textile repair and selling upcycled gear.
