Abstract
The article focuses on Atome PLC’s development of the world’s first industrial-scale green fertilizer project in Paraguay, supported by a 10-year offtake agreement with Norway’s Yara International ASA. The $665 million plant will produce calcium ammonium nitrate fertilizer using hydrogen derived from renewable hydropower, aiming to offer competitively priced low-carbon fertilizer to farmers in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, who currently rely on costly fossil fuel-based imports. The project is financed through a combination of $420 million in loans from institutions like IDB Invest and the International Finance Corporation, and $245 million in equity from investors including Hy24 and German development bank Kreditanstalt Fuer Wiederaufbau. Atome plans to begin construction in mid-2024 and is exploring additional green fertilizer projects in Paraguay, Costa Rica, and Brazil. [Extracted from the article]
