Abstract

The article focuses on a new campus in northern Rwanda, designed by MASS Design Group, aimed at supporting research and conservation efforts for the endangered mountain gorilla population in the Virunga Mountains. Currently, there are approximately 604 mountain gorillas in this region, which includes national parks across Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Uganda. The campus, named the Ellen DeGeneres Campus, opened in 2022 and features a conservation gallery, research center, and education center, all intended to engage local communities in conservation and provide educational opportunities. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, which has a long history of gorilla conservation, plays a key role in these initiatives, including collaboration with the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) to enhance cross-border conservation strategies.
