Abstract

This article analyzes the content of 100 English-language news articles on composting found via Google News, focusing on the accuracy and source of information presented. It finds that only 17% of articles originate from professional sources (.edu, .org, .gov), with environmental benefits of composting being the most frequently covered topic (68%), especially in professional articles. Topics such as the science and process of composting, home composting, and the role of composting in reducing food waste and landfills receive varied coverage, often more extensively in professional sources. The study highlights a gap in professionally vetted, detailed information available online and suggests opportunities for experts in food sustainability to enhance digital dissemination of accurate composting knowledge to support consumer education and sustainable waste management.
