Abstract

This article examines diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts within environmental education (EE) organizations in Wisconsin and nearby regions, focusing on inclusive practices, instructional materials, and pedagogy. Surveys conducted in 2021 and 2023 reveal that while many EE organizations recognize DEI as a priority, there is a notable gap between this recognition and the allocation of resources or implementation of concrete DEI initiatives, such as offering materials in languages other than English or engaging diverse audiences. Additionally, a majority of organizations lack consistent collection of demographic data on their participants, limiting their ability to tailor programs effectively. The findings suggest that to better support marginalized students and address STEM achievement gaps, environmental educators need to critically reevaluate and adapt their practices to be more inclusive and culturally responsive.
