Abstract

Recent books on the Western Hemisphere explore the complex history and politics of Cuba, the Cuban diaspora in Miami, Central American migration to the United States, and coercive adoptions in Guatemala. "Colonial Reckoning" by Louis A. Pérez Jr. examines how race shaped Cuba's politics during the nineteenth century, highlighting the involvement of both white and Black Cubans with colonial powers. "Covert City" by Vince Houghton and Eric Driggs focuses on the arrival of Cuban immigrants in Miami and the subsequent U.S. intelligence operations targeting Cuba. "Everyone Who Is Gone Is Here" by Jonathan Blitzer delves into the experiences of Central American migrants navigating the U.S. immigration system. Lastly, "Until I Find You" by Rachel Nolan explores the coerced adoptions of Guatemalan children and the ethical implications of transferring them from their indigenous communities to middle-class homes.
