Abstract
The article focuses on the experiences of Cubans during the upheaval surrounding Fidel Castro's rise to power and the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista's dictatorship. Prior to Batista's 1952 coup, Cuba exhibited stark social inequalities, with a wealthy elite coexisting alongside widespread poverty. Batista's regime faced minimal initial resistance, but the failed Moncada attack in 1953, led by Castro, catalyzed a growing public sympathy for the rebels. By mid-1958, the 26th of July Movement (M-26-7) gained significant popular support, ultimately leading to Batista's downfall, which resulted in rapid social and economic reforms under Castro's leadership, including land redistribution and a successful literacy campaign.
