Abstract

The article focuses on the challenges and future directions of biomedical research in aging, particularly in light of the 2025 freeze on US federal research funding. It highlights the widening global gap between lifespan and healthspan—the period of life spent in good health—and argues for a shift from a "war against disease" model, which prioritizes extending life by combating specific illnesses, to a "wisdom-inquiry" approach that emphasizes improving quality of life through translational gerontology and geroprotective interventions. The article underscores the importance of communicating the value of biomedical research to the public and policymakers while cautioning against unrealistic promises and ageist perspectives. Ultimately, it advocates for integrating biological aging research with public health strategies to increase healthy longevity worldwide.
