Abstract
The article presents the CENTERED framework—Centering Ethnic-Racial Identity in Education—developed through a synthesis of developmental psychology and education research to guide culturally affirming teaching and family engagement for Black and Latine youth. This framework highlights the dynamic interactions among youth, caregivers, teachers, and peers across home, school, and social spaces, emphasizing the central roles of ethnic-racial identity (ERI) and ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) in shaping these relationships and educational experiences. It underscores the need for teacher professional development that moves beyond awareness of discrimination to include understanding of ERI and ERS processes, fostering critical racial consciousness and bridging home-school divides through recognition of students’ funds of knowledge. The framework also serves as a tool for educators, families, and youth to advocate for culturally responsive curricula and equitable school environments, addressing systemic inequities rooted in historical and sociopolitical contexts.
