Abstract

The article examines the socioeconomic impacts of artisan implements on the agrarian society of the Gibe region among the Oromo people of southwestern Ethiopia, highlighting the integral role of crafts such as blacksmithing, tanning, pottery, weaving, woodworking, and basketry in supporting agricultural productivity and daily livelihoods. Despite their essential contributions, artisans face social marginalization and discrimination rooted in cultural perceptions, which, alongside economic inefficiencies and the rise of industrial tools, have led to a decline in traditional artisan practices. The study emphasizes the need for social awareness, institutional support, and inclusion of artisan-related issues in education and policy to sustain these Indigenous industries, which are culturally significant, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. It draws on qualitative data from primary oral interviews and secondary sources to fill gaps in the historical literature on the subject.
