Abstract

This article examines the emergence and evolution of Caribbean kiki scenes, focusing on Puerto Rican LaBoriVogue and Dominican Draguéalo as key examples of how millennials and centennials reinterpret ballroom culture—a global queer phenomenon—through localized expressions of gender, race, history, and folklore. It introduces the concept of *irreverencia cuir* (cuir irreverence) to describe a generational shift toward body- and sex-positive, defiant performances that democratize participation and challenge cisheteropatriarchal norms within these communities. The piece traces the origins, development, and community-building efforts of Draguéalo and LaBoriVogue, highlighting their roles in fostering safer, inclusive spaces for queer, trans, and non-binary individuals in Santo Domingo and Puerto Rico, respectively, while navigating tensions with diaspora ballroom scenes. Finally, it maps the growth of Caribbean kiki house-vogue networks and situates these movements within broader Caribglobal histories, emphasizing their significance as sites of Afroindigenous queer cultural survival and creative resistance.
