Abstract

This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes global daily moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels measured by accelerometers in preschoolers (3–6 years), children (7–11 years), and adolescents (12–17 years), adjusting for geographic regions and major MVPA cut points (Freedson 3 METs, Freedson 4 METs, and Evenson). Analyzing 84 studies with 57,587 participants across six continents, the study found significant differences in MVPA by age, continent, and cut point used. Globally, daily MVPA declines annually by approximately 7.88 minutes from preschool age through adolescence, with boys consistently exhibiting higher MVPA than girls across all age groups. The findings highlight early onset of physical activity decline and underscore the need for early interventions to promote sustained physical activity in youth worldwide.
