Abstract

The article focuses on the Cambodian Women's Health Study (CWHS), a four-phase community-based participatory research (CBPR) project conducted with the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association of Greater Lowell, Inc. (CMAA) to address health, nutrition, pregnancy, and food security among young Cambodian women in Massachusetts. The study integrated structured mentoring and training for undergraduate and graduate student research assistants, emphasizing cultural humility and community engagement, while providing meaningful compensation and capacity-building for the community partner. The CBPR approach facilitated robust recruitment, culturally informed data collection, and sustained community–university partnerships, benefiting the Cambodian community, students, academic investigators, and institutions. The study highlights the importance of equitable, long-term collaborations and intensive mentoring in producing socially just research that supports refugee and immigrant health equity and prepares students for diverse, globalized societies.
