Abstract

The authors examine developments 50 years since the enactment of Public Law 93-638, the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975, aimed at transferring the federal government's control of health care and education to tribal nations. They discuss how the statute failed to fulfill its trust and treaty obligations to promote equitable, accessible and culturally based health care for American Indian/Alaska Native communities, as well as suggestions to promote their well-being.
