Abstract

This article focuses on recent research analyzing rising drug overdose mortality among non-Hispanic Black adults aged 55 and older in the United States. Using national death records from the CDC's WONDER database (1999–2023), researchers found that this demographic experienced the sharpest increases in overdose deaths since the mid-2010s, surpassing younger Black adults and other racial/ethnic groups by 2019. The study identified cocaine, both alone and combined with fentanyl, as the primary substances driving this trend, with regional variations including methamphetamine-related deaths in the U.S. West. The findings highlight an urgent public health crisis requiring targeted interventions for older non-Hispanic Black adults. [Extracted from the article]
