Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges faced by Penang's Peranakan community as Malaya approached independence, highlighting their struggle to maintain a cosmopolitan identity amid rising ethnic nationalism and political change. Topics include the assassination of Dr Ong Chong Keng and its impact on Peranakan political action, the community's historical cosmopolitanism and ties to British colonial governance, and their responses to the postwar Malayan Union.
