Abstract

The article critically examines accusations of antisemitism, racism, and Eurocentrism against Karl Marx, the founding figure of scientific communism, emphasizing the complexity and ambivalence of his legacy. It acknowledges that Marx used racist and antisemitic language in private letters and reproduced some Eurocentric perspectives common in his time, particularly regarding non-Western societies like India. However, the article argues that these failings do not amount to systematic antisemitism or racism in his core theoretical work, which fundamentally critiques capitalist society and supports internationalist and anti-imperialist struggles. It highlights Marx's evolving views on colonialism, his recognition of the material basis of racism, and his rejection of crude historical determinism and unilinear Eurocentric teleology, advocating for an undogmatic and context-sensitive engagement with his thought. The article concludes that despite imperfections, Marxism's historical materialism remains a valuable framework for analyzing global capitalism, racism, and imperialism, especially when supplemented by critical and non-Eurocentric scholarship.
