Abstract

Following the publication of his monumental encyclopaedic grammar of Hausa ([7]) and several reference dictionaries, (see, e.g. [11], [12]), Paul Newman (PN) has now crowned his life's work on Hausa with this remarkable I History of the Hausa Language i . Section 6 (Lexicon and Etymologies) gives a welcome summary of PN's findings as regards Chadic retentions in Hausa vocabulary. A Hausa-English dictionary and English-Hausa vocabulary Compiled for the Government of Nigeria by G.P. Bargery, with some notes on the Hausa people and their language by D. Westermann.
