Abstract

What cosmologies, ontologies, and epistemologies are drawn on to talk about the environment in Aotearoa New Zealand, and what does it feel like to be Pākehā in Aotearoa in relation to the land and environment? I explore whakapapa and phylogeny, two narratives of relationality that communicate different cosmologies. With these in mind, I use an autoethnographic approach to discuss my own experiences of learning about the environment at university, and my own embodied experiences of relationality with the more-than-human world. As Pākehā, I reflect on the narratives that have informed my study and embodied experience, then turn to offer one possible way of responding to this knowledge, asking, how do we live in a land with multiple ontologies, and how do we practice reciprocity?.
